A face against time...

Dr Ruper Gabriel and Dr Frank Innes discuss the treatments carried out by Snowberry Lane Clinic.

If you want the nip and tuck without the knife, there are a number of ways to look 10 years younger without having to succumb to the surgeon's scalpel.

And according to new statistics, the number of non-surgical procedures in the UK has risen from 230,000 in 2005 to 472,000 in 2008 with a particular demand for Botox and facial fillers.

Many women and a growing number of men are drawn to these type of cosmetic treatments by the promise of a youthful bloom at far less cost and risk than a face-lift.

Dr Frank Innes, a partner at the new state of the art Snowberry Lane Clinic in Richmond Hill, Bournemouth, says their clients come from all walks of life.

"There is no one particular type of person who has these sort of procedures," he says.

"It's not just women of a certain age trying to recapture their youth. We also get middle aged businessmen who want to look fresh and sharp in an increasingly competitive workplace."

And Dr Innes added that business - there are five Snowberry Lane Clinics around the country - shows no sign of slowing down in spite of the current economic crisis.

"While we can't reverse the ageing process we can slow it down," he says.

"You don't want a woman in her 50s looking like a 30-year-old. Our aim is to help them look good for their age."

Practice manager Lee Harrison says he has had Botox and facial laser rejuvenation.

"I know lots of guys who have these sort of treatments. There's no shame in wanting to look your best these days. Appearance is important."

Dr Rupert Gabriel, a member of the British Association of Cosmetic Doctors, explains how skin fillers work.

"As we age out our skin starts to sag and wrinkle as the underlying fat and collagen diminishes.

"We use dermal fillers like Restylane which are made from a naturally occurring substance in the body called hyaluronic acid which plumps up the skin so it looks firmer and helps smooth out lines and wrinkles."

Dr Gabriel adds that it is one of the most tried and tested aesthetic treatments and has been widely used for more than ten years.

"This is a medically based clinic so we always make sure we do things properly. All clients have a full consultation prior to treatment and we go through all their medical history first.

"We start by using a strong topical anaesthetic cream which is usually left on for about ten to fifteen minutes.

"We tend to use the minimal amount of filler needed to start with and then allow the skin to settle down so we can top it up later if necessary. The effects will last between six to 12 months."

Elaine Nisbet, 41, from Lower Parkstone, was keen to try a dermal filler to smooth out a line between her nose and chin.

"The line was so deep it felt like a fold. I decided to try a dermal filler because I like the fact that the results are visible immediately.

"I was quite apprehensive at first as I've never had any treatment like this before. The injection near the nose was the most painful part and there was a slight bleeding where the needle was inserted but otherwise it was fine and the results are definitely worth it.

"I went back a few weeks later for a top up and I also had a few Botox injections around the forehead to smooth out a frown line that was starting to appear. I'm really pleased with the results."

Dos and don'ts if you're considering dermal fillers or Botox.

  1. Always make sure you have a full consultation prior to treatment.
  2. Avoid Botox if you're pregnant or breast-feeding.
  3. Make sure you are seen by a qualified healthcare professional.

You can expect to pay a minimum of £190 upwards for facial fillers and anything from £250 upwards for Botox injections. For more information visit website snowberrylane.co.uk
