Birthmarks

Birthmarks are a natural mark on the skin. They occur during birth or soon after. There are different types that include vascular and pigmented birthmarks.

Vascular birthmarks can appear on the face and head area.  If blood vessels are on the surface of the skin are affected, a vascular birthmark will appear in the colour of pink, purple or red. Types of vascular marks include the Salmon Patch, Infantile haemangioma and Port Wine Stain.  Salmon marks are pink or red and can appear on the neck, forehead or eyelids of a baby. It’s the most common vascular birth mark.  Infantile haemangiomas are usually raised patches on the skin and appear red. Port Wine Stain birth marks are flat purple or red marks that affect a tiny number of new born babies. They vary in size.

The colours of pigmented marks are brown coloured or tanned skin marks. They can appear all over the body. Types of pigmented birthmarks are Mongolian spots, Café-au-lait spots and congenital melanocytic naevi   Mongolian spots appear in the colour of blue, grey and are visible from when the baby is born. Café-au-lait spots are coffee coloured patches that are visible on a lot of children. Congenital melanocytic naevi are large black or brown moles that are visible on a baby from birth.

Cosmetic Laser Surgery

What is it?

Cosmetic laser surgery can be used to help diminish the appearance of birthmarks and in some cases leave your skin smooth and unblemished. The treatment involves using a laser over the birthmark which then generates heat energy to breakdown the targeted area.

Is it safe?

The treatment is non-invasive, so has shorter down-time than some other  more traditional treatments. You will receive top of the range care that is suited to your individual circumstances.

What happens before the procedure?

An initial consultation will take place and you will be able to discuss everything with the practitioner who is going to perform your treatment. You will learn what is going to happen and see examples of other patients who have already gone through the surgery.
