Your Top 5 Tattoo Removal Questions Answered

Tattoo Removal is one of the most popular procedures available at Snowberry Lane Clinic, with many people seeking to remove black ink tattoos that they now no longer want. Tattoo removal works by using laser technology, that delivers short pulses of laser light energy to the tattooed area. The dark pigment in the ink absorbs this energy and is destabilising and breaking it down.

  1. How many treatments are needed?
The removal of a tattoo is a big commitment, it takes multiple treatments over a long period of time and the number of treatments needed depends on the size and age of the tattoo as well as the individual’s skin type. On average around 10 treatments are needed. Each treatment must be 2 months apart in order to let the skin heal itself properly, so as you can see it takes years to fully remove a tattoo.
  • Does it hurt?
The short answer – yes. We try to minimise discomfort with topical anaesthetic cream, but much like getting a tattoo, it is not a pain free process. People liken this treatment to the sensation of a rubber band being flicked against the skin.
  • What happens after the treatment?

After the procedure a dressing will be applied to treated area which can stay in place for up to 24 hours. There will be some whitening to the skin and in some cases some redness, swelling and very light bleeding.

  • What are the results?
After a full course of treatments, you can expect for the tattoo ink to be completely removed, leaving next to no trace of the tattoo. In some cases, if the full course is not completed, very slight ghosting can occur, giving the very faint appearance of the old tattoo, but for some clients the tattoo is still reduced enough to cover up or be unnoticeable.

Everything you need to know about Laser Hair Reduction

Two of the most popular methods of hair removal are shaving and waxing, which although both are proven to be effective, require regular maintenance and can have negative side effects such as ingrown hairs and damage to the skin’s surface. Laser Hair removal aims to offer a long lasting solution to unwanted hair by collapsing the hair follicles so that hair can no longer grow.

Laser Hair Reduction is best for treating unwanted hair with a dark pigment, this is because dark hair facilitates the travel of the laser’s energy. Unfortunately light hair is not able to be treated in the same way.

Number of treatments: 6-9 minimum, treatments need to be spaced around the hair growth cycle so 6-10 weeks apart. It’s important to consider this if planning the treatment for a particular date.

Getting ready for Treatment:

  1. Steer clear of the sun. You cannot receive treatment if you are tanned or sunburned so you need to avoid sun exposure in the month lead up to treatment (this includes sun beds).
  2. Stop waxing. Laser hair removal requires the presence of the hair to reach the follicle, this means you can’t wax before treatment.
  3. Final preparation. The day before your treatment you’ll need to remove the hair in the treatment area by shaving.

Treatment Duration: 30-60 minutes

Anaesthetic: Topical anaesthetic cream

Sensitivity Period: Some discomfort during and straight after treatment. You might experience some redness after treatment, which is a common side effect and should only lasts a few hours. Immediately after treatment, we recommend you avoid activities such hot baths, saunas and exercise) that create excess body heat.

Back To Work: Straight away, there’s no downtime for treatment, but if you’ve had treatment on your face you might not want to go back to work immediately.

Duration of Results: Top up treatments might be required depending on the individual. This is usually annually or less

What can we do about unwanted veins?

Here at Snowberry Lane Clinic we offer two main treatments to help with unwanted veins such as broken, thread or spider veins. These veins can appear anywhere on the body, most commonly the face and legs. In appearance they are very thin, and sit just below the surface of the skin, they are often red, blue or purplish in colour.

Treatment option 1 – Laser Vein Treatment:

Laser vein therapy works by targeting the treatment area with a focused beam of heat energy, this heat causes the vein to coagulate and seal. The vessel is then broken down and is able to be reabsorbed by the body over the next 4-6 weeks.

Best for treating:

  • Thread veins
  • Spider veins
  • Facial veins
  • Thin leg veins

Number of treatments: 2 minimum

Treatment Duration: 30-60 minutes

Anaesthetic: Topical anaesthetic cream

Sensitivity Period: Some discomfort during and straight after treatment

Back to work: Straight away

Duration of results: Top up treatments required as veins reoccur. This is usually annually or less

Treatment option 2 – Microscleratherapy

Microscleratherapy uses a specially designed solution that is injected into the target veins, it works by restricting blood flow to the vein and causing it to fade and in some cases disappear. This treatment is designed to activate the bodies natural repair process, which is why some clients can experience light bruising in the treatment areas. Within a few days this dies down and after a few weeks patients are left with uniform colouring around the skin.

Best for treating: Thread and spider veins on the legs

Number of treatments: 1-2

Treatment Duration: 30 minutes

Anaesthetic: Topical anaesthetic cream if requested

Sensitivity Period: Some slight discomfort during treatment and possibility of bruising

Back to work: Next day

Duration of results: Can be permanent but it depends on the individual as veins can reoccur

Hair reduction for a smooth Summer

Permanent hair reduction can take on average 6-9 treatments to take effect so it’s important to take this into consideration if you have a date you’d like the treatment to be completed by.

The current most popular methods of hair reduction are shaving and waxing, which although undeniably effective, require constant maintenance and can have negative side effects such as ingrown hairs and broken skin.

Laser Hair removal aims to offer a permanent solution to unwanted hair by collapsing the hair follicles so that hair can no longer grow.

How does Laser Hair Removal Work?

The light beam of the laser is converted to heat energy as it passes through the skin. The dark pigment of the hair absorbs this energy and as it travels down to the follicle it collapses the follicle preventing further hair growth.

What do I need to think about and do before treatment?

In the weeks/months before treatment:

  1. Steer clear of the sun.

In the month lead up to your treatment you need to be mindful of sun exposure. You cannot receive treatment if you are tanned or sunburned. Sun beds and spray tans are also off the cards before treatment.

  1. Stop waxing.

Laser hair removal requires the pigment in the hair to reach the follicle, this means you can’t wax before treatment.

In the days before treatment:

  1. Getting ready for treatment.

The day before your treatment you’ll need to remove the hair in the treatment area by shaving.

What does the treatment feel like?

The majority of our clients find this treatment mildly uncomfortable, but not too severe. You will feel the warmth from the laser during the treatment and when the laser fires it feels like a flick against the skin. Some clients liken it to the sensation of a rubber band being flicked against the skin, however this sensation only lasts during the treatment.

How long does it take to work?

Laser hair removal is a real commitment; on average it takes 6-9 treatments, which have to be spaced out according to your hair growth cycle (every 4-6 weeks) so this is not a quick fix.

Side effects and aftercare

You might experience some redness after treatment, which is a common side effect and should only lasts a few hours straight after treatment. There is no downtime, so you can go about your day-to-day life straight after.

Immediately after treatment, we recommend you avoid activities such hot baths, saunas and exercise) that create excess body heat.

Laser Hair Removal – FAQ Special

Why is laser a good option for hair removal?

Lasers offer a long lasting and even sometimes permanent solution to dark unwanted hair. Traditional hair removal methods such as shaving, waxing, tweezing, threading and epilating provide only temporary results.

How do lasers remove hair?

The laser emits a specially configured light that is absorbed by the pigment in the hair follicle (hence why dark hair work best as it absorbs the light more easily). The light is converted to heat energy, which collapses the hair follicle.

Is it painful?

The laser handpiece has a contact cooling system built in which helps to eliviate discomfort during treatment. Clients liken the feeling of the laser to repeated light flicks, however, many say that it is less painful than waxing, electrolysis and tweezing.

What areas of the body can be treated?

Our hair removal lasers can treat nearly any area of the body except for the area immediately on or around the eye.

How long does a treatment take?

This depends on individual and the size of the treatment area. As a general rule, legs and backs take an hour to an hour and a half, while the upper lip or chin may require 15 minutes to half an hour.

How many treatments will I need?

Hair grows in cycles, can only be treated with laser in the actively growing period of the cylce. This means we have to wait for this part of the cycle to come around before treatment. Treatments are spaced out over the cycle, with each treatment reducing overall hair growth. Each individual is unique in terms of number of treatments needed, but a good average is around 8-10 treatments, although please note that some people needed less and some more.

Birthmarks

Birthmarks are a natural mark on the skin. They occur during birth or soon after. There are different types that include vascular and pigmented birthmarks.

Vascular birthmarks can appear on the face and head area.  If blood vessels are on the surface of the skin are affected, a vascular birthmark will appear in the colour of pink, purple or red. Types of vascular marks include the Salmon Patch, Infantile haemangioma and Port Wine Stain.  Salmon marks are pink or red and can appear on the neck, forehead or eyelids of a baby. It’s the most common vascular birth mark.  Infantile haemangiomas are usually raised patches on the skin and appear red. Port Wine Stain birth marks are flat purple or red marks that affect a tiny number of new born babies. They vary in size.

The colours of pigmented marks are brown coloured or tanned skin marks. They can appear all over the body. Types of pigmented birthmarks are Mongolian spots, Café-au-lait spots and congenital melanocytic naevi   Mongolian spots appear in the colour of blue, grey and are visible from when the baby is born. Café-au-lait spots are coffee coloured patches that are visible on a lot of children. Congenital melanocytic naevi are large black or brown moles that are visible on a baby from birth.

Some people find their birthmarks a cause for self-consciousness and decide to have them removed. At Snowberry Lane Clinic we offer a treatment that safely and effectively helps to remove or reduce the appearance birthmarks from the skin.

Cosmetic Laser Surgery

What is it?

Cosmetic laser surgery can be used to help diminish the appearance of birthmarks and in some cases leave your skin smooth and unblemished. The treatment involves using a laser over the birthmark which then generates heat energy to breakdown the targeted area.

Is it safe?

The treatment is non-invasive, so has shorter down-time than some other  more traditional treatments. You will receive top of the range care that is suited to your individual circumstances.

What happens before the procedure?

An initial consultation will take place and you will be able to discuss everything with the practitioner who is going to perform your treatment. You will learn what is going to happen and see examples of other patients who have already gone through the surgery.

If you would like more information on birth marks or the treatments available for the condition then please contact Snowberry Lane or call us on 01225 700072.
