Laser Vein FAQ

Laser Vein FAQ Main Image

Thread or spider veins are commonly very thin veins near the surface of the skin that are normally red, blue or purplish in colour. These veins can appear anywhere on the body, most commonly the face, thighs and calves.

How does laser vein therapy work?

Laser vein therapy works by targeting the treatment area with a focused beam of heat energy, this heat causes the vein to coagulate and seal. The vessel is then broken down and is able to be reabsorbed by the body over the next 4-6 weeks.

How do I prepare for treatment?

The main thing to take into consideration before treatment is to avoid sun exposure, as we cannot treat tanned skin as it could effect the pigmentation of the skin. On the day of your treatment the area needs to be clean and free from moisturisers or make-up. It is best to wear clothing that is comfortable and makes for easy access to the treatment area.

How many treatments will I need and what will the cost be?

This is something that varies from individual to individual. The first step is to come in for a consultation, and it is within this meeting with a practitioner that these variants can be defined.

You will need to allow four to six weeks between treatments, so it is important to bear this in mind, it is not something that will be complete in one session on one day.

Is treatment painful?

Clients do report a level of mild discomfort, although we do our best to counteract this with anaesthetic cream, and the laser hand-piece itself issues a cooling pulse to counteract the heat.

Does laser treatment get rid of the veins forever?

Technically the veins that have been collapsed using laser treatment cannot rebuild and reappear, however, spider veins can reoccur in the same place meaning more treatments could be needed in the future.

What should I expect after laser therapy?

After the procedure, the area treated might be a little tender and appear raised and reddened although this should fade a few hours after treatment.

Can I go back to work after laser therapy?

There is no downtime from laser treatment, so normal activities can be resumed immediately. However the area needs to heal so it is strongly recommended that you avoid the sun and very hot baths or showers in the weeks following your treatment.

How long does it take to see the results?

After the laser therapy, the veins normally change colour from a dark blue or purple to a lighter red colour, after which they often fade in two to six weeks. Please note this might take more than one treatment to achieve.

What can we do about unwanted veins?

Here at Snowberry Lane Clinic we offer two main treatments to help with unwanted veins such as broken, thread or spider veins. These veins can appear anywhere on the body, most commonly the face and legs. In appearance they are very thin, and sit just below the surface of the skin, they are often red, blue or purplish in colour.

Treatment option 1 – Laser Vein Treatment:

Laser vein therapy works by targeting the treatment area with a focused beam of heat energy, this heat causes the vein to coagulate and seal. The vessel is then broken down and is able to be reabsorbed by the body over the next 4-6 weeks.

Best for treating:

  • Thread veins
  • Spider veins
  • Facial veins
  • Thin leg veins

Number of treatments: 2 minimum

Treatment Duration: 30-60 minutes

Anaesthetic: Topical anaesthetic cream

Sensitivity Period: Some discomfort during and straight after treatment

Back to work: Straight away

Duration of results: Top up treatments required as veins reoccur. This is usually annually or less

Treatment option 2 – Microscleratherapy

Microscleratherapy uses a specially designed solution that is injected into the target veins, it works by restricting blood flow to the vein and causing it to fade and in some cases disappear. This treatment is designed to activate the bodies natural repair process, which is why some clients can experience light bruising in the treatment areas. Within a few days this dies down and after a few weeks patients are left with uniform colouring around the skin.

Best for treating: Thread and spider veins on the legs

Number of treatments: 1-2

Treatment Duration: 30 minutes

Anaesthetic: Topical anaesthetic cream if requested

Sensitivity Period: Some slight discomfort during treatment and possibility of bruising

Back to work: Next day

Duration of results: Can be permanent but it depends on the individual as veins can reoccur

Special Feature: Thread Veins

This week on the blog we’re talking about removing and reducing the appearance of thread veins. Thread veins are simply broken down blood vessels or capillaries, which can appear as red, blue or purple threads beneath the surface of the skin. They are very common and can appear anywhere on the body most often on the legs, arms, back of the hands and around the upper cheek area.

How can we help?

At Snowberry Lane Clinic we offer two treatment options to help deal with the issue of thread veins.

Laser treatment:

In some cases we use medical lasers to help break down thread veins to reduce their appearance. The Laser works by penetrating the skin with light energy to work on the veins without affecting the surface of the skin. During treatment the laser energy will be focussed on the target area and will cause the unwanted capillaries to collapse and break down, over time they will dissolve away, reducing the appearance and in some cases removing it completely.

Microscleratherapy:

Microscleratherapy utilises a medical solution that is injected into the target area to cause the veins to deteriorate, restricting blood flow to the vein and causing it to fade and in some cases disappear. This treatment is designed to encourage the body to naturally repair and that’s why some patients can have light bruises near the treated area. Within a few days this dies down and after a few weeks patients are left with uniform colouring around the skin.

Day 14: Microscleratherapy

SUMMARY: Microsclerotherapy involves the injection of a medically designed substance into thread or spider veins that causes them to collapse. Over several weeks they should become much less noticeable or even disappear.

ANAESTHETIC: Topical anaesthetic cream if requested
