Sculptra™ can help to overcome the inevitable ageing signs etched on our skin and combat the progressive loss in facial volume experienced when the facial muscles weaken and lose bone mass, and fat is lost in the cheek area, resulting in the overlying skin losing its firmness. As we get older and this process occurs we can lose the natural curves of the face resulting in the ageing appearance of sunken cheeks.

Restore facial volume
In the past one way for surgeons to deal with this was to relocate peoples' own fat, taken from other parts of their body and carefully inject this into the face to help restore a smoother more youthful contour. Sculptra™ offers a superior option to this type of fat transfer, not only restoring facial volume but improving lines and wrinkles in the skin.
What is Sculptra™?
Sculptra™ is composed of tiny beads of a synthetic material called Poly-L-lactic acid. It does not require a skin test prior to use as it is not made from human or animal sources. Poly-L-lactic acid itself is a biocompatible and biodegradable material that has been widely used for over 25 years in medicine, in dissolvable stitches and other surgical products.
What areas can be treated?
Sculptra™ works in the lower layers of the skin by helping to stimulate the production of collagen, gradually creating underlying volume in the treated areas. It can be used to improve wrinkles and folds, depressed scars, eye rings, and to restore volume to the face generally. If you're interested in more treatments to improve skin (especially for the face) read about photo dynamic rejuvenation.
What is the treatment like?
Each treatment takes around 30 minutes and involves injections using a very fine needle directly into the lower layers of the skin. The number of necessary injections depends on many factors. After the first treatment, we will recommend whether you need any subsequent treatments and how many sessions are right for you. Generally, three or four treatments may be necessary, spaced a month or so apart, to obtain the required results. The good news is that the results gained from the treatment can last for up to two years.
Are there any side effects?
Side effects may include some tenderness at the site of injection, with bleeding (due to the use of a needle), redness, bruising and mild swelling. These effects may last, on average, for two to six days but in most cases these effects are mild.
What results can I expect?
The results from Sculptra™ are not immediate; up to six weeks of gradual increase in skin thickness are needed before clear improvement is observed. Over this time, the volume of depressed areas increases gradually, producing a smoother, younger looking appearance.
Sculptra™ is not recommended for anyone who has a known allergy to Poly-L-Lactic acid or for women who are pregnant or breastfeeding.
